Umami alternative

Umami asks whether you want to run the server. Staats asks whether you want to open the dashboard. Those are different questions.

What Umami does well

Umami is open source, cookieless, and you can host it yourself. That last part is the real argument: your analytics data sits on infrastructure you control, with no third party in the path at all. No vendor can change the pricing, get acquired, or shut down and take your history with them.

If data ownership is the reason you chose it, nothing here beats that. A hosted product cannot, by definition.

The actual difference

Self-hosting has a cost that is easy to forget when you set it up on a good day: you are now the operations team. The database, the upgrades, the backups and the uptime are yours. For a lot of people that is a fair trade, and for a lot of others it is a service quietly rotting on a VPS.

Staats is hosted, so that work is not yours. But the more interesting difference is the interface. Umami is a dashboard. Staats has none, because your coding agent reads it directly over the Model Context Protocol:

It remembers your project. Staats stores what each site is for, what your funnel steps mean, and what every event tracks, so a question three weeks later does not start from a blank slate.

It knows what you shipped. Your agent tags each deploy with its commit and the routes it touched, then compares traffic before and after that exact change, and tells you when the difference is too small to trust.

It speaks before you ask. Unusual days, first-time referrers and pages whose share jumped are surfaced on their own, rather than waiting for you to go looking.

What you give up

Ownership. Your data sits on our infrastructure rather than yours. If that is disqualifying, it is disqualifying, and you should stay where you are.

Open source. Umami's code is public and ours is not.

The dashboard. No charts, deliberately.

Who should not switch

If you self-host because you want to own the data, keep self-hosting. That is a principled position and this is not an argument against it. Staats is for people who chose Umami to avoid Google rather than to run a server, and who have since noticed they never open it.
